Jean Walton, seated left, visited Down County Museum
from her home in Australia in 1996, in pursuit of ancestral research.
We were able to join her quest, and in 1999 she returned with other
members of her family to show them the Cell Block of the old County
Gaol, now the Museum, from which their ancestor John Kirk, parish
clerk of lnch, was transported to New South Wales in 1822, for 'being
in possession of a stolen cow'. The family are gathered round our
replica of the convict cart by which prisoners were conveyed to
the ports for removal to the penal colonies.
